Asbestos removal

Heat resistance, insulating properties and chemical resistance are just some of the diverse properties of asbestos, which made it a very popular and widely used building material into the 1990s. In Switzerland too.

The microscopically small fibres of which asbestos is composed, however, are harmful to humans and can cause incurable diseases, even several decades after contact. Therefore since 1990 there has rightly been a general ban on its use. The subject of asbestos is still relevant today, however, because asbestos-containing products were used in various forms in many industrial buildings and residential properties from the 1950s to 1980s. Whether as firmly bound (nonfriable) asbestos in Eternit panels, floor coverings and window putty or loosely bound (friable) asbestos in electric storage heaters, electrical switchboards or pipe insulation.

In renovation, remodelling or demolition projects it is therefore important to pay special attention to possible asbestos presence, because improper handling of asbestos-containing building materials can release millions of fibres. Unprotected persons are thus exposed to a health risk.

Decontamination and dismantling of safety workbenches

Since 2007 we have disposed of obsolete and contaminated laboratory equipment whose production or safety standards are no longer state of the art. These include Class 2 microbiological safety workbenches, cytostatic safety workbenches or closed containments (isolators) in which people worked with harmful chemicals, microorganisms or pharmaceutically active substances (e.g. cytostatics).

Dismantling

Our approach ensures proper disposal of disused workbenches. Our specially trained experts take account of specific health, occupational safety and environmental protection measures. These are already applied during removal of the facilities on site, during transport and during decontamination and dismantling in our suitably equipped premises. In this way inadvertent exposure of personnel and an uncontrolled release of environmentally problematic substances is prevented throughout the disposal process.

Remediation of contaminated sites

Hazardous waste sites are contaminated sites that pose a risk to human health and the environment. This mainly affects industrial sites, abandoned waste deposit sites and accident sites, but also areas used by the military.

Polychlorierte Biphenyle (PCB) sind synthetisch hergestellte Verbindungen mit vielseitigen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten. Sie wurden dank ihrer guten Isoliereigenschaften häufig in Kondensatoren und Transformatoren eingesetzt. Als Additiv in Farben und Lacken, unter anderem für metallische Bauteile, fanden PCB auch breite Anwendung. Trotz ihren guten Eigenschaften sind PCBs umweltbelastende und gesundheitsschädigende Stoffe. Sie sind schlecht abbaubar und bei hohen Temperaturen entwickeln sich hochgiftige Dioxine und Furane.   

Im Rahmen der Erneuerung des ewz-Kraftwerks Wettingen gab es grosse Flächen mit PCB-beschichteten Stahlteilen. Da sie in dieser Form nicht direkt der Verwertung zugeführt werden konnten, wurde die Chiresa AG im Jahr 2006 beauftragt, die PCB-haltigen Anstriche gesetzt- und umweltkonform zu entfernen. Die Arbeiten wurden vor Ort in einem für diesen Zweck eingerichteten Zelt ausgeführt und durch verschiedene Umweltschutzmassnahmen ergänzt. So wurde zur Minimierung von PCB-belasteten Staubemissionen eine spezielle Filteranlage eingesetzt. Zudem wurden Bodenproben vor und nach den Arbeiten genommen und Laboranalysen unterzogen. Die mit PCBs belastete Lackschicht wurde mechanisch mittels Sandstrahler-Technik und unter sicheren Arbeitsbedingungen abgetrennt.

Der PCB-belastete Sand wurde als Sonderabfall entsorgt. Der gereinigte Stahl konnte dann ohne weitere Massnahmen der Wiederverwertung zugeführt werden.
